A Sunny Session in Tempe

Last week, Dr. Theresa Ochoa and Sarah Swank had the opportunity to travel to Tempe, Arizona for the TECBD conference. TECBD stands for Teacher Educators for Children with Behavioral Disorders, which brings together researchers, educators, administrators, and others who are invested in the lives of our American youth with behavioral disorders. In addition to hearing two amazing keynote speakers, and learning from several presentations, Dr. Ochoa and Ms. Swank were able to share their work with HOPE and the importance of mentoring. Below is a photo of Ms. Swank and the accomplished scholar, Heather Griller-Clark, whose research the HOPE organization has found most helpful!

New Castle News

September marked the official start of the year for HOPE mentors in Henry County! Students met at the New Castle library for a first event, where everyone got to know each other through some ice-breakers like the ones featured in the pictures below. In this activity, mentors and mentees form a circle and grab hands with someone across the circle - the catch is that you can't hold hands with someone next to you, and you must hold hands with two different people. Then the tricky part comes - WITHOUT LETTING GO, everyone must work together and communicate to untangle the "human knot" until everyone is back in a circle standing side by side. We're looking forward to another activity this week at
